　　Each year there is an increasing number of cars on the roads as millions of new cars are produced. One out of six Americans works at making cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling up gas. Americans couldn't live without cars!

　　Most Americans would find it hard to imagine life without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of air pollution caused by cars. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

　　One way to get rid of the polluted air is to make a car without pollution. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field is slow.

　　Another way is to replace car engines with something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model for us.

　　To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we have to make some changes in our lives. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars.They are encouraged to use bicycles, which are thought to help keep the air clean.

　　But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory cioses down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment. Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

　　With the increase in the general standard of living， some ordinary Chinese families begin to afford a car. Yet opinions of the development of a private car vary from person to person.

　　Some claim that there are many advantages in possessing a car. It gives a much greater degree of comfort and mobility. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport， and buses or taxies. With a car he can go where he likes and when he wants， so much so that he can enjoy his leisure to the full by making trips to the country or seaside on the weekends， instead of being confined to his immediate neighborhood.

　　However， others strongly object to developing private cars. They maintain that as more and more cars are produced and run in the street， a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off， polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. In fact， private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams.

　　Whether private cars should be developed in China is a difficult question to answer. Yet the desire for the comfort and independence a private car can bring won't be eliminated.

As far as I am concerned, we should limit the number of private cars by providing better mass transportation and better service for the people. But there are those who worry that too many cars may cause more traffic problems, serious:air pollution and the exhaustion ofresources, While these problems may be true, they can be solved and some are being solved. For example, we can invent cars that: can save fuel or use other types of energy so that cars can still ‘be used even though resources run short. To reduce pollution, people have manufactured many cars without pollution. We can relieve the traffic pressure by building more and more roads or-adopt computer-monitored automated highways.
