  Fire Prevention on Campus

People are alarmed by the succession of campus fires in recent years. In each of these accidents, heavy casualties were reported - houses were burned down, students lost their lives, and properties were damaged. Faced with such a chilling fact, people keep asking, What on earth results in these repeated tragedies?

A brief survey of them reveals that human factors still prove to be the leading causes. For example, three of these fires were caused by the students use of electric water-heaters. As students often leave the heaters unattended, the risks are rather high should the water in the bottle boil dry while no one is around to turn off the power. In other cases, fires were also caused by stoves, candles, cigarette butts, etc.

Since most of these disasters could have been prevented if proper precautions had been taken, students should be better educated on the importance and measures of fire control. The following three reminders are of particular importance for us students: First, learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Second, double-check candles, heaters, stoves and other electric appliances, and make sure there are no open flames before leaving rooms. Lastly, do not smoke in the dorm.

Under the pressure of finding job, running a business is most fresh graduates' dream. But it is not as easy as speaking.

But a recent survey showed that such ambition lacks necessary support and still remain dreaming stage. The Shanghai Municipal Employment Promotion Center polled 1,276 graduates from several universities and colleges in the city, and showed 59.78 percent of respondents think it is possible to set up a company or a small store, but they just stop at the 'thinking' stage. The top reason for not releasing this dream is a shortage of investment and a lack of business opportunity.

In a word, it needs all kinds of factories to start a business. And when a person is going to run a business, he should arm himself with necessary knowledge.

  On the Senior Empty Nests

For most senior students in universities, the last academic year has nothing to do with academics. To the frustration of professors, few courses are attended by students. And dorms are almost vacant with few lodgers. This kind of phenomenon, which has been called “Senior Empty Nests”, is common among universities of China.

Where have those absent senior students gone? Some lucky dogs have gone to their new jobs while the majority are still striving to get a job or engaging in their internship outside of the campus. The severe employment pressure has pushed senior students into employment market earlier. The anxiety of getting a job before graduation disturbs the restless mind of every student, which leads to skipping school of most students.

In my view, with senior students leaving campus earlier, their time of education has been reduced, which puts them in a disadvantaged position in the employment market. Students should start job hunting after finishing the courses of the last academic year. At the same time, the universities should provide career education for senior students.

Many students ask why they shouldlearn to give speeches. They often argue that they don’t plan to bepoliticians, members of board, or company presidents. Students think that those are the only careers that require public speaking but overlook the fact that most of the thousands of speeches delivered every day are given by average people. The coach who explains and demonstrates the right way to make a lay-upis giving a speech. So are the police officer who speaks to second graders about not talking to strangers and the parent who reports to 110 about atraffic accident.

If you think about it, you’ve given and listened to more speeches than you realize. It only makes sense tostudy how to do it well, because speech-making is such an important part of your daily life. Most good speakers learn the speech-making skills; they weren’t born with them. What is more, there are listening techniques that will help youget more out of the speeches you hear. You never know when you’ll have the opportunity to present a speech or to listen to one. By learning good speech-making techniques, you can take advantage of opportunities at school, on the job and as a citizen in society.

Currently, many problems concerning the safety of food have popped up. As for me, I believe at least three factors account for this issue.

First, I observe that profits drive many food producers to commit illegal things. They aim to gain more money at the expense of consumers health. Second, the overuse of agricultural pesticide has resulted in the degradation of food quality. The excessive pesticide bears enormous health hazard for people. Furthermore, some food producers inject hormones into domestic animals so as to make them grow more quickly and thus they can turn in more profit. As a result, peoples health has been seriously disturbed.

All in all, food safety is such a great concern, and we all should do establish laws and implement them effectively to avoid producing toxic foods.

The human being differs from the wild beast in that the latter is liable to have a hostileview of others and interact in an unreasonable and aggressive manner. Primitive humansmight have acted in such fashion, but civilized humans should cultivate more appropriatebehaviors.

In the drawing above, a man carrying a large load accidentally steps on a woman's foot.Given that he gracefully apologizes, the woman both accepts his apology and assures him notto worry.

The man and woman depicted interact with each other in a courteous and compassionatemanner. The woman understands the man did not intentionally step on her foot, andtherefore whether or not she is in pain, she does not attack or blame him. Because she is ableto view the situation from his perspective, conflict is diverted. Mutual understanding such asthis is a fundamental aspect of civilized society.

Some people tend to think the worst of others and become angry over even the smallest ofmatters, regardless of how their own actions are disturbing in turn. Such intolerance onlyleads to more conflict. Disrespecting or mistreating people not only inflicts pain upon others, but can also harm one's own conscience and attitude.

Having compassion for others is an important facet of social intercourse. Once one strivesto understand the experience and perspective of another, one can avoid much trouble andconflict, thus making life more peaceful and just for all.
