撐著油紙傘,獨自彷徨在悠長,悠長又寂寥的雨巷,我希望逢著一個丁香一樣的,結著愁怨的姑娘。
她是有丁香一樣的顏色,丁香一樣的芬芳,丁香一樣的憂愁,在雨中哀怨,哀怨又彷徨;她彷徨在這寂寥的雨巷,撐著油紙傘,詩人眼中的丁香姑娘,像我一樣,像我一樣地默默彳亍(chì chù)著,冷漠,凄清,又惆悵。
她靜默地走近,走近,又投出,太息(“太”通“嘆”,太息就是嘆息的意思)一般的眼光。
她飄過像夢一般的,像夢一般的凄婉迷茫。像夢中飄過一枝丁香的,我身旁飄過這女郎;她靜默地遠了,遠了,到了頹圮(pǐ)的籬墻,走盡這雨巷。
在雨的哀曲里,消了她的顏色,散了她的芬芳,消散了,甚至她的太息般的眼光,丁香般的惆悵。
撐著油紙傘,獨自彷徨在悠長,悠長又寂寥的雨巷,我希望飄過一個丁香一樣的結著愁怨的姑娘。

《雨巷》1927年夏天,寫成后差不多一年,作者將它投寄到《小說月報》。當時代理《小說月報》編輯的葉圣陶一看到這首詩就非常喜歡,稱它“替新詩的音節開了一個新的紀元”,并送給作者“雨巷詩人”的稱號。這一年,作者才22歲。
一首好的抒情詩,應該是藝術美的結晶。它會超越時間和空間的限制而喚起人們審美的感情。然而多年來,《雨巷》和戴望舒的其他一些詩作,卻被視為象征派和現代派的無病呻吟而排斥在文學史的視野外;多年以后,人們才像觀賞出土文物一樣,把這些作品從遺忘的塵土中挖掘出來,又重新看到了它們身上的藝術光輝。
這首詩寫得既實又虛,朦朧恍惚。“我”似乎有著滿腹的心事,無限的煩憂,但又不愿明說,或者是說不出來。“我”似乎在期待什么、追求什么,而期待和追求的目標又顯得那樣遙遠而渺茫。“她”出現了,這或許是在幻覺中,或者是真的,但“她”的出現是那樣地快,逝去也那樣地快,一剎那間擦肩而過,消失在前方,“像夢一般的凄婉迷茫”。“我”只有自怨自艾,自悲自嘆。詩中的“姑娘”,我們可以認為是實指,是詩人心中期待已久的美麗、高潔而憂郁的姑娘。但我們也可以把這位“姑娘”當做詩人心中朦朧的理想和追求,代表了詩人陷入人生苦悶時,對未來渺茫的憧憬。
