　　小說的全部時間非常緊湊，前后只有四天：出海的前一天，一老人從海上歸來為引子，讓周圍的人物一個個出場，交代了他們與老人之間的關(guān)系：一個熱愛他，跟他在一起學(xué)習(xí)釣魚的孩子馬諾林;一對非常自私的父母;一群尊敬他，但永遠(yuǎn)不能理解他的打漁人;一個關(guān)心他的酒店老板。老人就生活在這樣的人物群體中，相比之下，他與眾人有著明顯的不同，他很樂觀，心胸開闊，是個經(jīng)驗豐富、充滿信心、勤勞勇敢、富于冒險、熱愛生活的純樸的古巴漁民。同時，這種輪輻式結(jié)構(gòu)還能產(chǎn)生線索清晰明了、中心集中突出、故事簡潔明快的效果。
