  History of Mother′s Day

In the U.S. Mothers Day is a holiday celebrated on second Sunday in May. It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and by Anna Jarvis in 1907.

Although it wasnt celebrated in the U.S. until 1907, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods that was given honor.

Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday." It was celebrated during June, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

In the U.S., in 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mothers Day. Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mothers Day on the second anniversary of her mothers death, the 2nd Sunday of May. The next year Mothers Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mothers Day. They were successful. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mothers Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the U.S.

In order to make me grow up well, every weekendand summer vacation was running for my cram class, even today, I was still working for my study and life. As a result, the feet were all blister and even a thick cocoon.

Today, mothers Day is ing. I decided to do something for my mother - I need to wash my feet for my mother, wash my mothers fatigue and wash away the dustfrommy mothers feet. First, I want to buy some carnations, and then cook a pot of water, until the water is boiled, smoke, and then pour it into the pot, then, put the petals in the pot, and let the water ripple the fragrance of carnations.

All right, everything is ready now. I called my mother and let her put her feet into the rich and fragrant pot. I washed my feet with my own hands, and my hands would wash my mothers tiredness all day. No! It was so hard for years! I felt my mother growing the bottom of the cocoon. My heart was very unfortable. My mother loved my head. She was happy and said, "my son grows up, understands, mother is very relieved." And I told mom that I had to study hard and learn to do housework as well as help my mother share the burden of the family.

Mothers day today, I and my mother have been very happy, mothers Day is built, it is the best festival in the world, it let the world mother have a day to aept blessing and return, even if only a word, even if only tiny things, but also let the mothers really warm!

The calendar turned to May 14th, silent, anxious silence. At last, I could not help but tears of glittering tears.

I grew up as a sick child with fever and illnessfromtime to time. My mother had to go to the doctor to see a doctor late at night. My mother was a middle school English teacher, and three of us lived in a middle school. At 2 in the middle of the night, the middle school closed the door, and mother could not go to the doctor. Mother looked at the wall, ruthless and cruel, then she held me in one hand and climbed the wall with one hand. Then he held me in the cold and cold street to see a doctor for my treatment. All this is what grandma told me. I can never imagine how a 21 year old mother holds the childfrom1. 2 meters of the wall over the past!

  母親節由來

Despite popular belief, Mothers Day is not just a holiday invented by Hallmark, but rather it is a holiday dating back several millennia.

The earliest known Mother’s Day originated in Ancient Greece honoring Rhea, mother of all deities, in an annual spring festival.

The Romans honored Cybele, the same mother of all deities, and celebrated this festival by calling it the “Hilaria.”

Early Christians continued the tradition by celebrating the Virgin Mary, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In England, the celebration eventually expanded to include all mothers.

Mother’s Day was not an official holiday in the United States until 1914. Modern Americans can thank the perseverance and determination of awoman named Anna Jarvis who, deeply devoted to her own mother, helped to make Mother’s Day an official U.S. holiday.

Jarvis’s mother, Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, was an activist during the Civil War and lost 8 of her 12 children before they reached adulthood.

When she died in 1905, Anna (daughter) was distraught and vowed to devote her life to honoring her mother.

Her devotion led her to strive to appoint an official U.S. holiday to recognize mothers. Though Mother’s Day had been celebrated informally for many years, Jarvis wrote many important figures (including U.S. congressmen and prosperous businessmen), imploring them to back Mother’s Day as an official holiday.

Anna’s efforts finally paid off. In 1910, the governor of West Virginia declared Mothers Day a state holiday on the second Sunday in May.

The following year, every other state followed suit. By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill declaring Mother’s Day a Federal Holiday.

At first, celebrations of Mothers Day were relatively private, where children wouldaccompany their mothers to the churches where their baptisms were held. Gradually though, Mothers Day has flourished into a significant and memorable occasion where many people express their love for their mothers through thoughtful gifts and quality time with family.
